Photos: Mali Hold State Funeral for Former President Amadou Toumani Toure












Mali have held a state funeral for former president Amadou Toumani Toure, an emblematic figure who steered the troubled nation to free elections and led it for a decade before being ousted in a coup.

Toure, sometimes called Mali’s “soldier of democracy,” died on November 10 at the age of 72 after he had been transferred to Turkey for medical care following heart surgery.

A coffin draped in the national flag and borne by six soldiers was slowly carried into the centre of a square in the capital Mali for ceremonies attended by the leaders of the country’s latest putsch and by foreign dignitaries.

 The presidential candidate of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Dr. Henry Lartey, says John Dramani Mahama’s decision to challenge the outcome of the 2020 polls in court will prove futile.  Speaking to Star FM News, the flagbearer for GCPP, said the National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama   clearly  lost the presidential race to the incumbent, President Akufo-Addo. “You’ve lost the election, he shouldn’t go to court; it’s a waste of money,” he said.  Dr Henry Lartey who doubles as the Secretary-General for the West African Association of Political Parties also maintained the NDC flagbearer is just acting under pressure.  He said he  believed that Mahama is being pressurised by some elements in the NDC to continuously reject the outcome of the elections.
