Chinese doctor claims Covid 'didn't come from Wuhan, it was just detected there'
A Chinese scientist has denied that coronavirus originated in Wuhan - claiming it was just the first place it was detected.
The virus, which has been linked to a 'wet market' at the central Chinese city since it spread across the world earlier this year, has so far infected more than 56 million people and killed 1.34m.
But Zeng Guang, the former chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), says that the killer virus is not Chinese in origin.
He said: “Wuhan was where the coronavirus was first detected but it was not where it originated.”
His claims, published by The South China Morning Post, come shortly after another top Chinese scientist argued that the virus was in fact imported in to China through frozen meat - rather than the popular theory that it had 'jumped' from animals to humans due to unsanitary butchery methods at the city's wet market.
Many experts believe coronavirus did originate in Wuhan. The Chinese claims come after an Italian study suggest the virus may have been present in Italy as early as September 2019.
